. How to Overcome Writer's Block Writer’s block is a debilitating and frustrating issue that can take many different forms. It may be that you find yourself unable to write anything at all, or maybe your writing is choppy and disjointed without any closure. Typically this frustration follows no pattern, meaning it will happen when you least expect it — for instance, during a high-pressure moment like an interview — and throwing any organization off course. Basically, writer’s block is the inability to find the words or put them onto paper. Sometimes this inability can be due to a mental block — such as stress — and other times it can be due to a physical problem — such as eye strain. The first step in overcoming writer’s block is first understanding why you may be experiencing it: what kind of issue is it and what has caused it? Once you understand the reasons for your writing issues, you can address them accordingly. Writing issues can be broadly split into two categories: those that are physical and those that are mental. Physical issues include such things as eye strain and stress. Eye strain usually manifests itself in the form of headaches, blurry vision and general discomfort while writing. Stress, on the other hand, is a major problem for many writers — especially those who write while working full-time jobs — and although it’s not always something that can be fixed overnight, there are several things you can do to alleviate some of its symptoms: • First and foremost: take regular breaks. Even if this means only five minutes every half an hour. Go to the bathroom, grab a glass of water or just step outside for a few moments. Going back to your computer without stopping every so often will only cause eye strain and possible physical discomfort. • Figure out what time of day is most conducive to you. If you’re an early morning writer, then put your alarm on for that time, but don’t force yourself to write in the middle of the night (or early morning). What works for one person may not work for another. This is why it’s important to experiment with different times and see what best suits your needs. • Commit to a schedule. If you know that you will require a certain amount of writing done during a certain time frame, make yourself accountable by sticking to this schedule as much as possible. cfa1e77820
