The same divisions exist in UK society that existed before the industrial revolution. Social mobility is at its lowest since records began.
That's the message from a new research report from Dr Adam Barnett, lecturer at the University of Cambridge.
Barnett, who teaches in the History Department, has written a new book on the history of trade unions and social class in Britain.
"Where there is a crisis, we have seen the ideas of class and inequality coming back to the fore," he said.
But he said that that being a unionist was changing. "It is very unusual to have an adult membership that is primarily white collar," he said.
Unions have been campaigning for reforms in the past few years. And that includes the right to strike. "Unions are fighting for these struggles against government and for people's wages to be paid on time," said Barnett.
But with that also comes new problems. "The biggest issue is the effects on policing. When a unionist goes on strike, sometimes that translates into me taking the train and turning up in Newcastle," said Barnett.
But there are problems with that as well. "The unions tend to think of themselves as fighting for black and white issues. They tend not to think about what it means to be a migrant worker," he said.
Migrants are more likely to be employed in the food industry and construction. That means they are likely to have different priorities from unionists.
